Australian Naval History on 1 June 1912

The River class destroyer HMAS WARREGO, (CMDR G. F. Hyde, RN), was commissioned at Cockatoo Island Dockyard, Sydney. The ship had been laid down and completely built at Fairfield Shipbuilding & Engineering, Govan, Scotland, then broken down again into it’s individual parts for shipment to Australia, to be re-assembled at Cockatoo Island. This was to allow training for the Australian dockyard workers, who were to build three more River class destroyers, (HMA Ships SWAN, TORRENS, and HUON). A rumour, at the time of re-building WARREGO, was that the British dockyard workers had included an extra steel plate in the consignment in order to ‘confuse the colonials’. WARREGO was re-launched at Cockatoo on 4 April 1911. Mrs G. F. Pearce, (Wife of the Minister for Defence), performed the launching ceremony.
