HMAS SYDNEY
Our speaker will be Warrant Officer Martin Grogan OAM RANR.
Marty Grogan is known to many of us and is member and good friend to the Victoria Chapter. His knowledge of HMAS SYDNEYs two and three is most extensive, Marty having served on HMAS SYDNEY three during the Vietnam war. Marty is still serving in the Navy of today, being Curator of the Naval Museum at HMAS CERBERUS.
HMAS SYDNEY Two had a very impressive record in the Mediterranean, being involved in the bombardment of Bardia in both May and August 1940, the battle of Calabria in May and the battle of Cape Spada in July that same year. Our member Gordon White was aboard during these battles and it was in this last stouch that he was mentioned in Despatches. The rest is history and we won’t pre-empt our speaker except to say that the Italian cruiser BARTOLOMEO COLLEONI was despatched to the deep and the other Italian 6” cruiser GIOVANNI DELLE BANDE NERE retired hurt.
Hear the heroic but intrinsically sad story of this ship and her crew when Marty joins us on February 22nd.
