Melbourne Cricket Club with naval flavour

Our speaker will be Alf Batchelder, leading maritime photographer and Historian of the MCC.

Alf Batchelder has prepared for us an illustrated lecture which begins with an outline of how his keen interest in ships developed. He has for us pictures of HMS KING GEORGE V, USS BIRMINGHAM, HMS THESUS, HMS TELEMACHUS, USS TARAWA, RMS CANBERRA, QE2,and QM2.

From there Alf moves on to ships on which MCC members served and/or died, such as the LAWHILL, HMVS CERBERUS, HMAS SYDNEY, HMAS PIONEER,the CENTAUR and MONTEVIDEO MARU. Alf will also show photos of the first international cricket tour of Australia and SS GREAT BRITAIN,the CSS SHENANDOAH, USS ENTERPRISE(1885) and the Great White Fleet, concluding with the visit of the RN Squadron, including HMS HOOD, in 1924
