Restoration of HMAS Castlemaine

Address by Peter Williams

We are delighted to advise that our speaker in August will be Peter Williams. Peter is an acknowledged expert on the Colonial Navy in Victoria.

Peter’s presentation builds on the considerable interest generated by our June presentation by Cmdr John Wilkins on “The Role of Williamstown and Victoria as the Cradle of the Victorian Navy”.

Peter Williams has a very impressive collection of Maritime items including plans and ships’ log books from the Colonial Victoria era. Most of what you see on display in HMAS Castlemaine is from his collection.

The Museum ship HMAS Castlemaine berthed at Gem Pier Williamstown is a permanent memorial to the men of our Corvettes/Minesweepers which served Australia in WW2. Peter Williams is very much involved in this project and he will tell us of the restoration of “Castlemaine” and the very active group of volunteers who do such a splendid job of keeping this ship in such splendid condition.

Join us at 7:30pm at the MNC in Sth Yarra. The centre will be open from 6.30 pm to facilitate use of our library. All are welcome. Membership of the NHS automatically entitles you to participate in the activities of the Victoria Chapter.
