George Raper-First Fleet artist

Midshipman (later Lieutenant) George Raper, of HMS Sirius, was the First Fleet’s most talented artist. In 2005, the National Library purchased a recently-discovered collection of 56 of his First Fleet paintings, which depict birds and flowers. The Library had also purchased a smaller collection of his coastal profiles and maps a few years earlier.

Linda Groom, Curator of Pictures at the National Library and author of a recently-published book on Raper, will speak about Raper’s life and naval career, which included dramatic events such as the wreck of the Sirius and the siege of Toulon. Copies of the book will be available for sale, by cash or cheque, after the talk.
