The role of Williamstown and Victoria as the Cradle of the Australian Navy
Address by CMDR John M.Wilkins RFD* RANR rtd.
John Wilkins is a Naval Historian, a member of the Society and President of the “Navy League” in Victoria. He joined the Royal Australian Naval Reserve in 1960 as Lieutenant{L} RANR, transferred to Special Branch as Lieutenant-Commander RLSP in 1972 and in 1980 was appointed Head of Intelligence {Reserves} in Melbourne. John was promoted to Commander in 1982 and transferred to the inactive list in 1985.John was awarded ther Reserve Force Decoration and Clasp {RFD*} in 1984.
John has nine publications to his credit, including “The Life and Times of Captain William Lonsdale 1799-1864″,”Nieuwe Dieper, Port Phillip’s Accredited Spy”, “Australian Naval Reserves-A Brief History 1859-2003″, “World War II Honours and Awards and Precedence List [RAN-RANR]“, “The Royal Australian Naval College and Sir John Collins”, and “Australian and British Naval Buttons, Buckles, Banners, Badges and Braid 1748-2006″.
John is also editor and publisher of “Autobiographical Recollections of a Naval Reserve Officer 1893-1987″ by Commander RS Veale CMG VRD**RANR as well as two books on the Postal History of Afghanistan.
