‘The Yachties, Aussie Naval Heroes who Served in the RN During WWII’

When: Monday, 22 May 2017 at 7:00 pm

Where: Waverley RSL 161 Coleman Parade Glen Waverley (Melways 71C3)

Jan Roberts Billet MA will tell us of the exploits of the ‘Yachties’ in WWII.  That is Australians who served in the Royal Navy during WWII, and who collectively were awarded 4 George Crosses, 10 George Medals,31 DSC’s and 1 DSM, together with 34 MiD’s,3 OBE’s 3 MBE’s and a Conspicuous Gallantry Medal, the CGM.

Jan is an Historian with a passion to achieve recognition for the 1100 Australians who served in the Royal Navy during WWII.  Approximately 500 of them served through the Yachtsmen Scheme.  Jan will tell us of the exploits of those decorated and also of their colleagues, brave men all!!  Their collective stories are indeed impressive.

Jan will also recount her difficulties in obtaining recognition of their exploits by their own Australian War Memorial and the AWM’s eventual understanding of the Yachties Sterling service to the allied cause and contribution to final victory.  Jan’s quest came to fruition on Thursday May 4th, when a ceremony was held in the Captain Reg Saunders Courtyard of our Australian War Memorial to unveil and dedicate a plaque to veterans of the Dominion Yachtsman’s Scheme.

The Waverley RSL is conveniently situated opposite the station in Glen Waverley.  The RSL Car park is free but you need to display a ticket on your dashboard.   (obtainable from reception)

'The Warramunga restaurant' opens at 5.30 pm and a number of us take the opportunity to enjoy a lovely meal and a few drinks before the meeting.  You are very welcome to join us! As we need to book tables please contact our coordinator, Rodney Phillips on 0466 983 313 or rodneyphillips212@hotmail.com.
